GÉRARD MUGNERET

Comprises 6 hectares of some of the most distinguished vineyards in the Cote de Nuits. The family home and cellars lie just downhill from the Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, Winemaker Pascal Mugneret descends from one of Burgundy’s iconic families: Pascal’s  grandfather, René, was the uncle of Dr. Georges Mugneret, whose widow and daughters run Mugneret-Gibourg. Pascal grew up in the cellar run by his father, Gerard, but studied physics and pursued a career as an engineer before agreeing to take the reins in 2005.

A committed proponent of conforming work in the vines and the cellar to the rhythms of lunar and planetary cycles, he runs the Domaine along biodynamic lines, although he is not certified.  As a general proposition, Pascal de-stems the fruit, allows 4-5 days of cold settling before fermentation over indigenous yeasts. After a cuvaison of 2-3 weeks in tank, he decants the wine into oak, of which only 25-30% is new. The wines are racked once after malo and, after 15-18 months of élevage, are gravity bottled by hand from each barrel without fining or filtration.
